Recently our team exhibited Dazychain at the inaugural Corporate Legal Operations Consortium (CLOC) conference in Sydney. It was an exciting two-day event, featuring some of the profession's brightest corporate minds, from the biggest corporations such as Google and Cisco, discussing how legal departments can grow their impact, demonstrate their value and effectively manage their operations.
Here are some important takeouts:
- “If you don’t like change, you’ll like irrelevance even less.” Connie Brenton, Chairman of CLOC reiterated the importance of change management in an industry rapidly evolving with technology.
- Making real change is about people, process and technology. Steve Harmon, Vice President and Deputy General Counsel of Cisco says “Just relying on technology is like buying a treadmill to get fit but leaving it in the bedroom and using it to hang clothes on.”
- There is an important distinction between platforms and point solutions. Clients will increasingly want complete solutions, not just legal solutions.
- Mick Sheehy, chair of CLOC Australia, believes that because lawyers have knowledge across the whole organisation, they are well suited to play a much bigger role than in just, for example, processing contracts. By using technology lawyers can free their time to avoid the mundane and focus on the strategic.
- Plan your process and logic before implementing a new technology. Don’t adopt a technology and embed the wrong process.
